JANUARY


New Year's Day : 1 January, a national holiday.  

FEBRUARY


Day of Restoration of Statehood of Lithuania (1918): 16 February, a national holiday. Sartai Horse Cart Race: a traditional Lithuanian trotting-race being organized on one of the largest lakes of Lithuania the Sartai Lake since 1905.

Uzgavenes” (Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras): a day when crowds of masked people dressed as devils, witches and ancient village folk attempt to drive away the winter burning of the winter symbol More. The festivity echoes elements of the mythological beliefs of the ancient Baltic people, including the worship of heavenly bodies and nature.

 

St. Valentine's Day: 14 th February , - a day of love celebrated in schools, pubs, restaurants, shops, offices and streets with read-heart balloons, love cards etc. Vilnius Book Fair: the largest annual book fair in the Baltic States. Among the participants there are many corporate stands of publishers from Europe and beyond.

MARCH


Kaziukas' Fair: a traditional spring event held annually in Vilnius for some 400 years. It is a traditional fair of folk art and fine crafts, dedicated to the Day of the Patron of Lithuania Saint Kazimieras. During the festival the streets are filled with wood carvings, metal sculptures, ceramics and local textiles, accompanied by traditional Lithuanian country music.
Day of Restoration of Independence of Lithuania (1990): 11 March, a national holiday.  

APRIL


Easter (usually in March or April) , a national holiday.

Vilnius Spring: a cinema festival which consistently introduces with European cinema traditions and news as well as Lithuanian cinematography.

Cinema Spring: an international cinema festival during which the spectators are presented with most interesting and best films recognized and awarded in various international cinema festivals during the year.
New Baltic Dance: an international contemporary dance festival, the most outstanding festivals of the kind in the Baltic States. The event invites dancers from Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, England, France, Russia, Poland, Latvia and Lithuania.
“Jauna Muzika” (Young Music): a festival of the neo music by the composers belonging to the young generation. The festival welcomes modern music of various trends, genres and styles.
The Return is a classical music festival during which concerts are given by the Lithuanian musicians, residing and working abroad.
 

MAY


International Labour Day: 1 May, a national holiday. “Skamba skamba kankliai”: an annual international folklore festival of Vilnius city.
Vilnius Band: the only international Big-band and Dixieland Festival not only in Lithuania but in the neighbouring countries as well. The most famous Lithuanian big-bands and eminent orchestras, ensembles and soloists from foreign countries take part at the event.
The New Drama Action: the festival promotes the direction of new plays by Lithuanian and foreign authors on the Lithuanian stages, as well as introduces with a new foreign dramaturgy.

JUNE


Pazaislis” Music Festival: a solid festival of classical music, annually searching for new spaces and names, presenting an extensive and diverse programme.
Run Run Horse: an ethnographic sports festivity which welcomes to compete in horse-riding and trotting race, take part in horseshoeing and harnessing contest, night pasturage, enjoy ethnographic ensembles.
“Jonines” (Middsumer's Day /Feast of st. John): 23 June, - also known by the names of Cupola or Dew, a national holiday which falls when the shortest night of the year comes with its own brand of magic, recalling the ancient rites of the pagans. It is the time of bonfires and gatherings, folk songs and ritual dancing throughout Lithuania. Vilnius Carnival: unites various festivities, such as Water Fiesta, Parade of Umbrellas, Sitting on a Pole and lots of weekend concerts. It is a unique opportunity to familiarize with the capital of Lithuania.
Medieval Trakai: an annual festival, taking place at the castle of Trakai, full of magic rituals, folklore music and the music of the Middle Ages. Knights' fights with swords, bats and battleaxes.  

JULY


 Lithuania's Day of Statehood: a national holiday celebrated on 6 th July, with the most impressive festival taking place in the ancient Lithuanian capital Kernave.  The St. Christopher's Summer Festival: music and theatre premiers, outstanding projects and concerts arranged in the ambience of unique Vilnius architecture.
 Days of Living History and Archaeology: an outdoor festival in Kernave, Lithuania's ancient capital, during which Lithuanians recreate life as it was, live in ancient villages and practice prehistoric crafts including food preparation and cooking, fur and amber processing, medieval iron smelting, coin minting and weapons production. Special outdoor areas are also prepared to show how medieval battles and military skills were performed.  International Thomas Mann's Festival: a variety of concerts, art exhibitions, literary afternoons, film views etc. taking place in the sea resort town of Nida. It is a famous cultural event proud of its audience not only from Lithuania but foreign countries as well.
International Car Race Horn Grand Prix: a 12-hour long racing along with concerts, various entertainments and shows in Lithuania's summer capital Palanga.

Klaipeda Sea Festival: concerts, exhibitions, fairs and picnics on ships in Lithuania's port city.

AUGUST


 Day of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin: 15 August, a national holiday.  International Opera and Symphony Festival “Muzikinis Rugpjutis Pajuryje” : classical music concerts in Klaipeda, Nida, Juodkrante all August.

SEPTEMBER


The Days of the Capital: a traditional festival of Vilnius, involving festivities of diverse popular genres – carnivals, fairs, concerts, fireworks, taking place in all streets and squares of the capital.  International Instrumental Folklore Festival “Griezyne”: the only of such kind in Lithuania and the oldest in the Eastern region of the Baltic, organized in Vilnius every 2 years, proud of thematic exhibitions, folklore cinema, documental ethnographic films about customs and traditions, dances, music, production of instruments, etc, taking place in streets, squares, cafes and bars of Vilnius.
International Festival “Vilnius Jazz”: a jazz festival called a threshold between East and West – foreign jazz reviewers affirm it to be the centre of music, embodying the trends of modern jazz. International Vilnius Theatre Festival “Sirenos”: production of the European theatre stars and modern Lithuanian stage.

OCTOBER


Halloween: 31 October, a night merriment, a ghost and vampire carnival in streets and pubs, extremely enjoyed by the Lithuanian youth.  

NOVEMBER


All Saints' Day: 1 November , a national holiday.  

DECEMBER


Christmas: 25-26 December, a national holiday.
